day one in echo park

My mom helped me set up a lovely two tiered bedside tray by my bed (couch) with all kinds of activities for my eyes and brain, plus drugs, water, and a heating pad. We are watching the Eagles get their asses handed to them (it's only 2nd quarter, so....?) and it is in the 80's! I had visitors this morning, my Aunt Jane and Uncle Ken and their friend Leif, who brought a bag full of great recovery gifts, including homemade beef'n'barley stew!

I am starting to recognize my pattern of severe pain seems to come before and after sleep, and at about the 3.5 hr mark into the Percaset journey. In a matter of minutes I turn from a well-tempered young lady into a groaning, shivering, crabby elderly woman who cannot move without agonizing pain. It doesn't last... but still. Yeah. Yuck.

Otherwise I'm having a pretty good day. I took a short walk with my mom at the park. We had to literally drive down the driveway with me strapped in the seatbelt under a pillow, and park at Echo Park Lake, which I can totally see (and hear) from my front door. The walk was very slow, and gave us time to look at all the birds in great detail. Using a cane. Somewhat out of breath. Not moving out of the way for joggers and skateboarders. They can deal!

  1. We should get you a skateboard that you can push along with your cane, like a gondola!

  2. I've got a pretty wide skateboard with big wheels you can borrow. it's under the sewing table. um..wait...if that's not actually a medically sound idea then brian is to blame.

Sounds like you are recovering quickly if you made it through a whole walk w/o trying to knock anyone down with your cane in true crabby old lady style.

  3. Well god DAMN it!! I swear I just wrote the most profound, funny, heartwarming, uplifting, poignant, and most importantly, succinct missive of my life, and stupid blogger spits it out the back and it does not post! Ah well. You'll have to settle for seconds. It went something like this:

Who can go through a scary as hell, vaguely-defined surgery, get a cornucopia cut out of her womb, end up narcotized and still in horrible pain, go sleepless for several days because of said pain and narcotics, throw in vampyres, and then get out and make me laugh like hell even while I'm whincing in sympathetic pain and shock? Umm, errr...that would be you, sweetie! You are amazing!

I am so exceedingly happy that you have those horrible beasties out of there and are back with the great, unwashed and low-dosed masses! Thank you for taking the time to write and share all of this. I can't imagine how awful that was for you to go through. Hospitals are no fun even under the best of circumstances—whatever those are in a hospital.

Thank God for Brian! Hooray Brian!!

Since everything in my world is always about me, I will share a short story. Julia got her wisdom teeth out about 12 years ago. It sucked. She used to have a horrible thing about dentists, so an oral surgeon might as well be an American prison guard at Abu Ghraib—before there was such a thing. They took her into the back room and said she would be back there for about 45 minutes. Mr. Short Attention Span Theater gets bored after about 15 minutes, so I confirmed how much longer I had to wait with the receptionist, and then went directly across the street to a little electronics shop to pay too much for a portable CD player—which you may remember from such "CTD Hold Music Greatest Hits" as Monotrona, Watoo Watoo, Vortex Navigation Company, and Gravity Wax.

Anyhoo, I saunter back across the street with my new, overpriced portable CDman, which by the way is still spinning the ripped hits in the little tech dungeon just off the warehouse, and upon entering the waiting room am immediately greeted by the nurse telling me that Julia is not only out of surgery, but is indeed at this very moment awake, aware, and asking for me! I go into the back only to find Julia very loopy on sedatives and painkillers and in tears, because it turns out I was NOT answering the phones, helping people find their sick but repaired loved ones, or even rescuing wayward pigeons on the sidewalk out front, but had instead abandoned her to GO AND BUY CRAP I DIDN'T REALLY NEED because I was bored and had already done the maze in that month's issue of Highlights.

So be thankful for your man, and for goodness sakes LISTEN TO YOUR MOM AND BOYFRIEND when they tell you to do stuff. It's for your own good and nobody likes an icky patient...not that I'd know about that either. [ahem]

Glad to hear you got out of the house already and are walking around, even if it is super slowly. When I had my hernia surgery it took me about an hour to get upstairs to my bed and another week to get back downstairs and out of the house, so I think you beat me by about 6 days and with much more severe surgery, but everybody says girls are tougher than boys. I do not doubt this in any way. If it ever comes to it, remind me never to fight you, no matter how much alcohol I have consumed.

    We love you!
